Bends in the Road, Fuel for the Grind: Inside the Veteran-Owned Mindset of No Straight Path Apparel

AUSTIN (Austin Fitness Community) - Every fitness brand promises to help you reach your goals, but very few focus on what happens when the road collapses beneath your feet. For Austin-based, veteran-owned apparel brand No Straight Path (NSP), those moments of disruption aren’t just expected - they are the entire point.

Founded in 2021 by military veteran Cody Huntington, the brand didn't actually start with its now-signature name. "No Straight Path was actually our slogan back in 2021, under the name of ‘Lifestyle’ as our original concept," Huntington shares. "Once we started telling our story more frequently at local gym pop-ups and farmer’s markets, we realized that NSP was more relatable and truly captured the meaning of our brand."

Navigating the Roadblocks

That meaning is forged directly from real-world adversity. The phrase "No Straight Path" serves as a blunt acknowledgment of life’s messy, unpredictable nature. For Huntington, the brand’s identity is anchored in how we respond when things go sideways.

"In short, NSP represents life’s journey," says Huntington. "There’s always going to be challenges and obstacles we face, but what defines us and builds us are the decisions we make when we hit those roadblocks."

This philosophy is physically stitched into every piece of gear via the brand’s distinctive logo. Visually, the emblem traces a path starting from the bottom and moving upward. It isn't a straight line; it features distinct bends. "Each bend in the logo represents an obstacle all while maintaining an upwards trajectory," Huntington explains. "This is why it represents our ability and decision to keep moving forward when facing setbacks in life."

Veteran Roots and Real-World Testing

The discipline required to maintain an upward trajectory through chaos stems directly from Huntington’s military background. Pulling from intense training and operational experiences, the NSP team relies heavily on core values like integrity, patience, and determination to navigate the cutthroat world of apparel e-commerce.

"Part of that training taught us how to remain calm under pressure and stay focused on our objectives," Huntington notes. "And with any goal, key elements to success include patience and determination, which is why those are two of our core values."

That military mindset also influences their rigorous product development. NSP doesn’t just slap a logo on blanks; their high-performance clothing is custom-made and subjected to months of brutal testing by athletes competing in everything from grueling ultra-marathons to high-intensity CrossFit competitions. According to Huntington, it took years of trial and error to truly master clothing design and earn their reputation.

The Lifelong Trajectory

Through that operational grind, Huntington learned a crucial entrepreneurial lesson that changed the company's growth trajectory: progress over perfection.

"Coming from a military background, we tend to get lost in the smallest details striving for perfection," Huntington admits. "This oftentimes would lead to missed opportunities. Sometimes it’s more important to just move forward and learn as you go, rather than waiting for something to be ‘perfect’ and not learning anything at all."

This commitment to authentic community and resilience was on full display at their recent annual "Murph" event, a brutal Hero WOD honoring fallen Navy SEAL Lt. Michael P. Murphy and all military members who made the ultimate sacrifice. For NSP, hosting these community workouts is an extension of their DNA. "The goal of these events is strictly to build camaraderie in the community and workout for something more than ourselves," says Huntington. "We don’t push sales or seek recognition."

Looking ahead toward the end of the year and into early 2027, NSP plans to bring that zero-ego, community-first ethos to major fitness expos and races, alongside expanding their premium running and lifting lines.

Because no matter how the path bends, the only direction is forward.
